The Story of Coffee

 

The First Cup of Coffee:

Coffee was discovered about a thousand years ago in Yemen. A young boy called Omar was in the mountains with his goats when he became very hungry. He saw some small red berries on a plant and tried to eat them. They were very hard, so he decided to cook them in his fire. When the berries were brown, he boiled them in some water. After five minutes, Omar drank some of the water. It tasted delicious. Omar drank the first cup of coffee.

  

The Arabian coffee trade:

In the 17th century many ships came to the Yemeni port of Mocha in order to buy coffee. Arab ships from Mocha exported Yemen coffee to Egypt and Europe. They also carried coffee to Muscat. Form Muscat, Omani sailors carried coffee to India and Iraq.

 

Coffee plants and coffee beans:

Coffee grows on small plant. These plant are called Arabian coffee plants. They grow best in mountains with warm, wet weather. They grow about two metres high. These plants produce red berries every year. The coffee beans grow in side these berries. The beans produce coffee.

 

Coffee in the 18th century:

In the 18th century other countries with warm, wet weather began to grow coffee plants. People produced coffee in India, Sir Lanka, Indonesia and Brazil. Soon people all over the wold began to drink coffee and it became important for wold trade.

 

Coffee in the wold today:

People drink coffee all over the world. The biggest producers are Brazil, Colombia and Kenya. The biggest consumer is the USA and they import 40% of the world's coffee.

 

Coffee production:

There are six steps in coffee production. First, people pick the berries. Second dry the berries in the sun. Then remove the skins. After that roast the beans in ovens. Next grind the beans. Finally pack the coffee.
